Biology majors can expand their selection of course offerings by participating in a cooperative program with the University of Pittsburgh's Field Station at the Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology, located in northwestern Pennsylvania.
The Department of Biology at Ä¢¹½tv is proud to offer the opportunity for students to enroll in summer field courses at the University of Pittsburgh's Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology (PLE), a year-round biological station located in northwestern Pennsylvania.
Students can earn 4 credits per course while making progress in their upper-level biology classes. All PLE summer courses meets the field biology requirement for Ecology, Conservation, and Environmental Biology Track students, or can be counted as a controlled elective in Biology by students in other tracks. Students register for credit and pay fees at Ä¢¹½tv; books, lab fee, and room and board are paid to the Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology. Courses are three weeks long, and are offered from May to August in four sessions.
Students participate by enrolling in the elective course BIOL450/550 "Field Studies at Pymatuning" and selecting from one of more than ten available PLE courses taught by faculty from University of Pittsburgh, Clarion University, Edinboro University, Slippery Rock University, and Ä¢¹½tv. Past course offerings have included Ecology, Wetland Ecology, Behavioral Ecology, Forest Ecology, Conservation Biology, Field Botany, Limnology, Ornithology, Herpetology, Wildlife Management, and Field Techniques in Ecology and Conservation (taught by Ä¢¹½tv faculty). New for summer 2014 is a course in Disease Ecology.
