The goal of this course will be to introduce film studies through the most recent work of David Bordwell, Poetics of Cinema. Students will learn to define narrative and stylistic elements of film and how they communicate in relation to each other. We will also consider the filmmakers influence on the work through considering some films of Alfred Hitchcock and Yasujiro Ozu as well as cultural and cross-cultural influences as we focus on several eras and genres of Japanese cinema. Basically, the course will provide insights into how films communicate, why they have come to look the way they do under various circumstances, and how they always communicate at multiple levels. I think students will find they can use this course to develop their own course of film studies, understand film in relation to literature better, and formulate their own ideas of how to incorporate film into their teaching.
