Excused: John Orife APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of December 8, 1998 were corrected as follows: To the last item of the minutes, "The following proposals will be held until next week's meeting," item I. HP I75 Prevention and Care of Injuries to the Physically Active, new course (98-22) is not to be held over for action but rather to be withdrawn from consideration. Also, added to that list should be MA100 Intermediate Algebra, catalog description change (98-34). In addition, the agenda for December 15 was corrected: Item V.A. 1.a. should read "Dr. Irwin Marcus." The corrected minutes were approved on a Howe/Sadler motion. CHAIR'S REPORT The chairs posed a question from C. Reber who asked about the process for making a revision to the syllabi of ED 242 & 342 (student teacher supervision courses). The intended revision is to add participation in a minimum number of class meetings to be held with faculty supervision. The UWUCC recommendation is to bring this revision forward as a course revision and to put something in the courses description noting generally the stated requirement. Also, any affected departments would need to provide letters of support. The cochairs announced that the UWUCC will meet on January 19, pending available agenda items and that starting with this meeting, the committee will meet in the Sutton Board Room. ITEMS FOR REVIEW/POSSIBLE ACTION: (for approval) The following Liberal Stuhes Committee Report Items were approved on a Blackledge/Staszkiewicz motion. A. Liberal Studies Committee Report: (for information) 1. Synthesis proposals approved: a. LS499 -The 1960's: Decade of Protest -Dr. Irwin Marcus b. LS499 -Rock & Roll and Society -Dr. Stanford Mukasa Program Revision: Approved change in the Liberal Studies Math requirement for the Health and Physical Education and Sport degree programs. This change is from a choice of MA 101, MA 110 or MA 217 to specifying MA 217 for the LS Math requirement. The cochairs reported that once again, Janet Goebel has again challenged the process of requiring departmental approval for LS 499 courses approved as Honors College courses. The committee restated its position that departmental approval was necessary-unless Goebel chooses to submit a request for changing the process. The Provost will reiterate this information to Goebel. B. Critical Language Program, program revision (98-3la) C. IT 101 Basic Italian I, new course (98-31b) D. IT 102 Basic Italian II, new course (98-31c) E. IT 201 Intermediate Italian III, new course (98-3Id) F. IT 202 Italian IV, new course (98-3 le) The screening committee had not received responses from the proposers to last week's questions. However, the cochairs had met with the chair of the Spanish and Classical Languages Department to discuss that department's issues regarding the change of Italian taught in the Critical Languages Program to that affecting regular faculty workload. The cochairs summarized some of the issues as follows: Is there a violation of the curricular process to offer the course with an FL prefix when the course exists as a CL course? The cochairs asked the registrar why this action was taken; his e-mail answer did not really answer the question. APSCUF was also asked to speak to the issue, but Pat Heilman had not yet responded. The Provost responded that the administration decided to take the grievance regarding this action in order to create the courses for which there was interest, especially in the Music Department. Who should the proposal come from? Should it come from all three language departments or the director of the critical languages program? Who is the curriculum committee from the critical languages department? What was the process for making revisions to Critical Languages before? Does the Director of Critical Languages have the power to delete courses from the program? Should there be letters of support from the other departments? Why did the French Department sign off on the paper work and not the Director? We still need signatures and the course deletion. Other questions and concerns: There are issues over allocation of resources that the UWUCC can't resolve. The SC chair reported that the college curriculum committee did pass it, even if by a slim margin. Was the college curriculum process followed? Should we be able to teach a language both ways? These and other process questions will be investigated by J. Kuzneski, the chair of the screening committee, before further deliberations are made concerning the Italian proposals. Also, she will contact J. Carranza concerning his earlier request to address the UWUCC. G. Minor in Management Information Systems, program revision (98-32) What is the current minor? Can we tell from p. 2 if this is different from what currently exists? If it is, what is the rationale for the change? All the courses required have prerequisites, so it is a prerequisite change. We need a list of their current minor requirements. We need a course revision for 25 1 and 255 since the course being deleted is a prerequisite for both of these courses. Where in the catalogue is this going to appear? When do they want the new minor requirement to begin? What about students currently in the program? Add that each student will be considered individually in this process of changing over and that no student will be required to take more than 15 credits total to complete the minor. Is there a minimum QPA required for a minor? If so, what is it? 2.0 in minor and major field? Make sure to explain all these changes throughout the document, change by change. H. IM 261 Micro Database Systems, new course (98-2) I. IM 241 Introduction to Management Information Systems, course deletion (98-5) Continuing discussion on these additional IM proposals resulted in the following questions and recommendations: IM 261--clarify C1-address the resource statement again. Should there be a statement in the prerequisites that states that MIS majors &t take this course? The total number of hours in the syllabus is 42. What is happening in the exam period? State something about the culminating activity as separate from these hours. Are the textbooks out of date? B2 conflicts with the Miscellaneous Statement. A statement of exclusion should be in the course description. Note on the minor and on the course to include computer science majors. Can CO students take an MIS minor or not? If yes, can they use IM 261 toward the minor or not? Need a grade range on the Evaluation Portion of the syllabus. We will expect course revisions that list 241 as a prerequisite. M. Sadler raised a final question about revisions in course objectives. The UWUCC verified that any change in course objectives requires a course revision process. The following courses have been approved by Liberal Studies and are pending approval by the UWUCC before advancing to Senate: 1. SC210 2. MG348 3. Approved change in the Liberal Studies Math requirement for the Health and Physical Education and Sport degree programs. This change is from a choice of MA 101, MA 110 or MA 217 to specifying MA 217 for the LS Math requirement. The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 pm.
