APPROVAL OF MINUTES from November 17 UWUCC meeting Two typos were duly noted and corrected. Minutes were then approved as read. CHAIR'S REPORT Cochair Wilson talked to the MIS proposers regarding their wish to proceed with their program revision without waiting for Computer Science who expects to have co-listed courses with MIS in their revisions. The committee agreed that if sent separately by MIS, the CO courses would have to come through again as course revisions to IM. G. Wilson will inform MIS accordingly. In response to J. Goebel's expressed belief to the contrary, the UWUCC reiterated the directive that HC courses of an existing LS 499 course do indeed need to have the official approval of the affected department as part of the formal process. The department must support the course with the necessary faculty and instructional resources, plus the H approval requires some redesign of the course to fit the HC criteria, which the department must approve. Cochair Wilson will inform Goebel accordingly. Staszkiewicz announced that the certificate program being marketed by the College of Business but containing several unauthorized conditions has been pulled by R. Camp until the program completes the proper review process. Staszkiewicz will convene a meeting in spring to determine what that process should be. A motion was made and approved to reorder the agenda to begin first with the four Italian course proposals since visitors from the French Department were awaiting the opportunity to address the committee if necessary. ITEMS FOR REVIEW/POSSIBLE ACTION: (for approval) A. IT 101 Basic Italian I, new course (98-31b) B. IT 102 Basic Italian II, new course (98-31c) C. IT 201 Intermediate Italian III, new course (98-31d) D. IT 202 Italian IV, new course (998-31e) E. Critical Language Program, program revision (98-31a) M. Staszkiewicz outlined several issues that surround the removal of Italian from delivery through the Critical Languages Program to that of the French Department. These issues include questions of complement, resources to meet existing student needs, the use of the FL prefix to offer the course as special topics while still part of the CL Program, the use of temporary faculty hired to teach the course, where the course belongs. He explained that some of these issues are in formal grievance. Members of the UWUCC expressed the opinion that the grievances were not the committee's concern and that it should proceed with the approval process. J. Kuzneski reviewed the proposal, explaining that the screening committee had questioned the proposer as to the department's resources and had received a handout in response. In spite of several inaccuracies on the handout, it was finally decided that resources within the department were adequate. This was further verified by the chair of the department who was asked about the assurance of having the additional complement listed on the outline. There were questions about the similarity of objectives among the courses. The UWUCC was told that the department did make adjustments and that on further inspection these changes proved to be adequate. The proposers were also asked about their stated condition of mandatory attendance in all the courses. They explained that they only meant for the condition to apply to the 100 level courses. They would change this, as well as process a formal deletion of Italian from the CL Program and correct the catalogue discrepancies in other CL offerings, namely Finish and Swedish. Since earlier there had been issues raised by the chair of the Spanish Department via e-mail and a request to meet with the committee concerning these proposals, it was decided to hold action on the Italian courses until the co-chairs could contact the Spanish Department chair to discuss his request. F. Liberal Studies Committee Report -none G. MA 100 Intermediate Algebra, catalog description change (98-34) This minor change in the note (adding MA 105) was approved unanimously on a Roberts/Weiner motion. H. BS in Applied Mathematics (Track), program revision (98-35) There was much discussion about the real intention of this proposal and whether or not it was actually a program revision. The confusion was over the intended meaning of track: Did the department intend for these program listings called "tracks" to be noted as such on the transcript? If so, then the proposal requires a more fully developed rational for the changes. If not, then the recommendations for the tracks appear to be simply an advising tool and should not be advanced as a proposal. The screening committee will clarify this with the department-and point out the need for other minor changes should the proposal becomes a true program revision. The following proposals will be held until next week's meeting: I. HP 175 Prevention and Care of Injuries to the Physically Active, new course (98-22) J. Minor in Management Information Systems, program revision (98-32) K. IM 26 1 Micro Database Systems, new course (98-2) L. IM 24 1 Introduction to Management Information Systems, course deletion (98-5) The following courses have been approved by Liberal Studies and are pending approval by the UWUCC before advancing to Senate: 1. SC201 2. MG348 The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 pm.
