Excused: Mary Sadler APPROVAL OF MINUTES The April 28, 1998 minutes were approved as read. INTRODUCTION OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS New members were introduced. There has been no word on the membership of D. Richardson, who is currently on sabbatical. Student members are yet to be chosen. There is representation from each college. CHAIR'S REPORT A. Counseling and Student Development Center J. Kuzneski will follow through on discussions with Jay Mill regarding the request for a prefix to begin offering courses. B. Critical Languages J. Kuneski suggests we handle this topic, as in the past, through the screening committee. The appropriate SC will receive all the messages J. Kuzneski received regarding this issue when the Italian proposal under question is brought forth. C. Pre-Law Program J. Kuzneski met with Art and Brenda. The proposal for the pre-law program never approved as a program will be adjusted. D. Revised Curriculum Handbook J. Kuneski is still working on this. E. Certificate Program Proposal from School of Continuing Education There is a question from N. Kolb about how best to proceed in offering a certificate program where a major does not exist. The proposal will require state system approval; Kolb will be informed to plan according to that directive. F. Cross Listing of CSIID 433 Study Tour Course J. Kuzneski explained the appearance of this item on the Senate docket-that it was appropriate to list it and necessary for clearing the docket. G. Docket Review Committee reviewed the current status of items remaining on the docket. The next docket will be printed with revised status of remaining items, renumbered, and new items added, and screening committees assigned. The following dates were noted: Senate Meetings Agenda Deadlines September 15 September 2 October 6 September 23 November 3 October 21 December 1 November 18 February 2 January 20 March 2 February 17 April 6 March 24 May 4 April 21 J. Kuzneski has been asked that we help the registrar's office know when things are to become active once approved by senate. This information cannot be listed on the Senate agenda along with each item. We will have to find a simpler mechanism for supplying the information on an ongoing basis. ELECTION OF COMMITTEE CHAIR AND SECRETARY Jim Myers was nominated on a Carranza/Orife motion. Myers asked about the possibility of having co-chairs. Following a discussion of this concept, Gail Wilson volunteered to co-chair the committee with Myers. J. Orife moved to elect the pair as co-chairs. G. Sechrist seconded the motion. It was approved unanimously. Carrny Carranza volunteered to continue as secretary. She was reelected on an Orife/ Blackledge motion. G. Wilson will contact Camp about the possibility of using the Eberly Board Room for meetings and also check on Johnson. ORGANIZATION OF COMMITTEE WORK (SCREENING COMMITTEES, ETC.) G. Sechrist, J. Orife, and J. Kuzneski volunteered to chair a screening committee. Screening Committee membership is as follows: 1. Sechrist, Boda, Camp 2. Orife, Roberts, Sadler 3. Kuzneski, Blackledge, Howe ITEMS FOR REVIEW/POSSIBLE ACTION: A. Liberal Studies Committee Report-For information 1. Synthesis courses: a. Aging in America-Dr. Teresa Shellenbarger (9/10/98) 2. Writing-Intensive: a. Anita Henry, Type I Writing Approval (professor commitment) (9/10/98) There was unanimous approval on a Kuzneski/Orife motion to accept the Liberal Studies Report. B. BI332 (97-44)-Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, course revision and number change (was BI432) Committee did not have the corrected copy of the proposal with the changes requested by the screening committee. Pending action on the proposal until the corrected copy is received, the committee continued with the following questions: Question: Explain the discrepancy in the lecture/lab hours-how many hours of each are expected? Suggestion: Include something in the course description to explain the unique manner of holding lecture/labs. Question: Review phrasing of the objective (e.g., how will "appreciation" be measured)? Question: If the course is being updated, why use a lab text from 1975? Answer: Proposer says it parallels the course best, is still available, and is a good book. C. BS in Communications Media, program revision (97-52a-nn) *Note: Committee members are encouraged to review the entire proposal for the September 22 meeting. However, given the scope and size of the proposal, the Screening Committee will focus the review on the part of the proposal from the beginning through the end of the course revisions. Discussion of the new course proposals may be targeted for a subsequent meeting. Rational is to update the program, change some requirements, and make some number and course changes. Question: Is 271 a course that isn't being changed? Answer: Yes-it is listed in the Production sequence. Question: What is the rational for offering the internship only in the summer. Answer: There are not enough faculty members to supervise during the year. Students cannot complete a degree in 4 years unless they do the internship in summer between junior and senior year. Currently 85% are doing the internship in this manner. They either finish in 7 semesters and a summer or 8 semesters and a summer, graduating in august. Question: Will you explain the letters of support or nonsupport. Answer: Journalism letters of non-support express concerns about terminology and overlap on two courses. Butzow is aware of journalism's concerns. Some departments simply didn't respond. Question: is there a reason for no requirement in CM201? Answer: The rationale is in one of the letters (from business ed). It could be put in the list of production courses. This didn't come up in discussions of the proposal in the department. It could be added to controlled electives. The direction of this course is politically changed and students do get the Internet exposure in other courses. Question: Other requirements -now 21 credits, prior 18-Is there agreements with other departments? Answer: Not a problem. Historically there are courses for them available. Question: No list for advisors to use? Recommendation: Create a list for advisors to use. Questions: p. 1.-What is good academic standing? Answer: 2.0, and 2.5 only for education majors. Question: p.2.--Is it alright to specify that the BE/CO/IM 101 be taken freshman year? Answer: Yes and D. Richardson agreed. Question: Do the credits add to 124? Answer: No. Need to change free electives to 3-8. Make same change on p. 3. Question: p. 6-8--have you done any assessment of impact of requirement of c or better on subsequent class size and availability. Answer: Don't have that data. Felt necessary for writing intensive classes. Will check the impact using past class lists/progress sheets. Question: Why is no statistics course required for CM302. How can students manage the course objectives. If they need a C in research writing, why don't they also need a statistics course to do the statistics? There are no data analysis lessons in the course: not in the objectives nor the course outline, not in the course description--why should it be in the course? Answer: They won't be doing hard statistics. Basic research skills can be taught in the course. This course is very basis regarding statistical analysis of data. The department will not agree to add statistics as a requirement. Suggestion: How about adding a component on data analysis to the proposal. Committee completed a review of the first 8 pages. Adjournment: 5:00pm.
