Call to Order Present: Carmy Carranza, Robert Camp, Barbara Blackledge, Marilyn Howe, Jodell Kuzneski, Jim Myers, John Orife, Richard Roberts, Mary Sadler, Gail Sechrist, Gail Wilson. Excused: II. Approval of Minutes from September 22 UWUCC meeting Approved as read. Holly Boda will be excused from membership on the committee due to a time conflict. III. Introduction of Committee Members IV. Chair's Report Student Members Four names are on the list. Only three may be members of the committee. G. Wilson will confirm the three names for next committee. Francisco will check with rules committee about replacing Holly Boda. Agendas will be put on the web eventually. Mary Sadler had a question about Liberal Studies approval for associate degrees. There is no neat category to use in advancing these proposals through the UWCC. How should this be done? Discussion: This is our first example of Liberal Studies requirements for associate degrees (i.e., a generic Liberal Studies component to an associate degree program. The process could be: The proposal comes through the Liberal Studies office. We will accept some sort of report from Liberal Studies to consider and advance to senate for action (i.e., Name the components of the proposal--what it is, what is the rational, what impact is there on resources). B. Docket Review The docket had been revised with everything removed that had been approved last year. The status of carryovers was confirmed. V. Items for Review/Possible Action: (for approval) A. BI242 (98-9)-Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, course revision and number change (was BI432) The current syllabus was obtained. The SC had asked the proposer to make minor changes which were reflected in new copy. Recommendation: There should be a notation in the course description explaining it is a combination lecture/lab within the same session. Question: Are we letting the 1975 textbook go? Answer: G. Wilson will question this item again. Question: How has this course changed from a graduate level course to a sophomore level? The SC did not ask this question. On examination, the objectives seem to be appropriate for this level and are clearer than the old ones. The student workload has been reduced. There was a Camp/Roberts motion to approve the course on condition that a phrase be included in the course description about the integrated lecture/lab feature. There was unanimous approval. At this point there was an Orife/Roberts motion to change the order of the agenda to consider the French proposal (Item C) first. The motion was passed on a vote of 7 yes and 2 no. C. BA French for International Trade, program revision (98-8) J. Orife explained that the basic difference between this program and old version is to revise the French program to be consistent with the new business administration minor. There was discussion the difference in the Liberal Studies approval and the stated math requirement, "MA 105 or any approved LS Math course except MA 217. Did D. Richardson really approve it as LS105? [MA 105] Does LS have to approve the new language or reject this item in the proposal? Shouldn't the proposal say MA 105 recommended. This prompted a discussion about whether LS really needs to approve every change. If it is a change within the definition of Liberal Studies, why shouldn't it just go there as an information item? Response: This suggestion may be pursued, but at this point, we will make a recommendation that the proposer make the change to the curriculum: "Any approved LS math course except MA 217, MA 105 recommended." If not, the proposer should go back to LS and say what they want. Also, top of the page, change the 54-56 to 53-58. Recommendation: Need to state in their part of the catalogue that students taking this degree will be restricted to 25% of business coursework. (This is due to accreditation requirements). The courses need semester hours after them. Add the credit total for graduation. Electives will change because of the change to Liberal Studies total, 53-58. Question: Does the catalogue description in the narrative part for French change? P.94 Recommendation: that they put in something about this degree. It can be added when they make the rest of the changes. Approval will be postponed until Orife communicates recommendations to the proposer. BS in Communications Media, program revision (98-10a-nn) Back to CM proposal-p.9. Concerning the question of the impact of the C or better requirement in English courses on class enrollments. A random study revealed a 10% repeat need. That level of need is significant enough to keep the requirement. There was continued discussion on the internship requirement and implementation. Concern was expressed about requiring something of students that they had to secure themselves. It was explained that there is course preparation for arranging an internship. The suggestion was that we wait until the internship course revision is considered; there will be an opportunity to discuss the issues and concerns at that time. P. 10-22--course deletions. P. 1 1-what about deleting 480 independent study and adding 482 independent study? Is there a need to do a number change? If the number is still there but just inactive, there is no need for a process of changing a number. The G. Wilson will check the status of 482. P. 23-32--number changes. Change the comma to "or" on all the number changes or add "or permission". G. Wilson will change each one. We will start on page 33 next meeting.
