A new dual-enrollment program at 蘑菇tv will give high school students the opportunity to get a jump on earning college credits in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields鈥攁nd at significant savings.
Offices and organizations at 蘑菇tv have come together to raise funds, food, and gifts for local residents in need this holiday season.
蘑菇tv graduate Nathan (Nate) Spade, of Mechanicsburg, has been appointed by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf and confirmed as a member of 蘑菇tv鈥檚 Council of Trustees. His term will extend through December 2022.
Students completing degrees in December and January are invited to participate in the December commencement ceremonies. Students receiving a total of 752 degrees are eligible for the ceremony. Of this number, 533 are bachelor鈥檚 degrees, 173 are master鈥檚 degrees, and 46 are doctoral degrees.
A team of art students鈥擩ennifer Blalock, Anthony Bookhammer, and Bill Brown鈥攚ere recently chosen as the winners of a contest to place art in 蘑菇tv鈥檚 Allegheny Arboretum. Their project, titled 鈥淟egacy Marker,鈥� was the result of a Request for Proposal (RFP) sponsored by the arboretum. The $1,000 prize for the winning team, plus $500 for materials, was sponsored by Ray Kinter, an 蘑菇tv alumni.
Through collection efforts in the community, Greek organizations at 蘑菇tv collected $4,095.37 for the Indiana County Salvation Army Treasures for Children program. This fundraising effort, in its 11th year, has resulted in more than $28,000 collected for this local program that benefits needy families in Indiana County.
Following a search, Edel Reilly, professor of mathematics and assistant chair of the Department of Mathematics at 蘑菇tv, has been selected to serve as the director of 蘑菇tv鈥檚 Liberal Studies program. The Liberal Studies program is designed to meet the goals of the university and to provide a comprehensive curriculum that will provide all 蘑菇tv students the opportunity to meet the Expected Undergraduate Student Learning Outcomes.
Four 蘑菇tv students have been awarded a scholarship that honors a former 蘑菇tv mathematics professor and co-founder of the 蘑菇tv Computer Science Department, James H. Maple. A cybersecurity lab in the department has also been named in Maple鈥檚 honor.
蘑菇tv will again send a team of experts to the Health, Safety, Security and Environment Conference and Exhibition, sponsored by the American Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad and Tobago. Now in its 20th year, this year鈥檚 conference theme is 鈥淚nnovative HSSE Strategies for Today鈥檚 Challenges.鈥�
蘑菇tv鈥檚 Humanities and Social Sciences building has earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification. LEED recognition provides independent verification of a building or neighborhood鈥檚 green features, allowing for the design, construction, operations, and maintenance of resource-efficient, high-performing, healthy, cost-effective buildings.
A group of 蘑菇tv faculty, led by Justin Fair and Anne Kondo, both from the Department of Chemistry, recently received $663,835 from the NSF for their project, 鈥淏etter Preparing STEM Graduates for Employment: An Interdisciplinary, Problem-based Approach for Teaching and Assessing Teamwork and Interpersonal Skills.鈥� The award is one of the largest research grants ever received by 蘑菇tv.
Dozens of events are planned over the Homecoming weekend of October 14 through October 16 at 蘑菇tv.
More than 200 蘑菇tv students will provide community service at six sites on October 8, 2016, for the fall Into the Streets event.
蘑菇tv is actively enrolling students for its new Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health and new PhD program in Counselor Education and Supervision following today鈥檚 formal approval of the programs by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Board of Governors. Students may begin work in these courses of study in fall 2017.

The Department of Communications Disorders, Special Education and Disability Services at 蘑菇tv will offer its sixth annual 鈥淐onfections for a Cause鈥� on September 21, 2016, on the second floor of 蘑菇tv鈥檚 Davis Hall to raise funds for ovarian cancer education and research. Almost $6,000 has been raised during the last five years of the event.
Delaney Automotive Group will be honored with the Distinguished Family Business Award by the 蘑菇tv Center for Family Business at the annual awards ceremony on September 26, 2016. The ceremony,聽open to the public, will be held at 5:00 p.m. in Eberly Auditorium, inside the聽Eberly College of Business and Information Technology.

Nicole Fidler of Orwigsburg is working in the office of Speaker of the House Mike Turzai, R-Allegheny, as part of a 15-week internship sponsored by Pennsylvania鈥檚 State System of Higher Education. Fidler is a senior at 蘑菇tv, where she is majoring in international studies and political science and minoring in French.
Michele Papakie, chairwoman and associate professor of Journalism and Public Relations at 蘑菇tv, represented the institution鈥檚 chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi鈥攖he nation鈥檚 oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines鈥攁t the 44th Biennial Convention held July 28 to 30, 2016, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania is one of four universities in Pennsylvania and one of 67 in the nation selected for a national program designed to offer federal Pell grants to incarcerated students. The initiative, the Second Chance Pell pilot program, allows eligible and qualified incarcerated Americans to receive Pell Grants to pursue postsecondary education.聽
Tracey Cekada, Associate Professor, Department of Safety Sciences, was selected for the 2016 Dr. William E. Tarrants Outstanding Safety Educator Award, given annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). Thirty students and 15 teachers completed a week-long Cybersecurity Camp (GenCyber Camp) at 蘑菇tv. The camp, part of a national initiative supported by the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation, was directed by Waleed Farag, Department of Computer Science, and Dighton (Mac) Fiddner, Department of Political Science, and was funded by a grant of $50,000 from the National Security Agency.
蘑菇tv faculty members and students will move into year six of testing water from the Beaver Run Reservoir as a result of an $85,000 contract with the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County. With this most recent contract, 蘑菇tv has received a total of $390,000 since 2011 to test and monitor the reservoir鈥檚 water quality.

The North Dining Commons is scheduled for opening in fall 2017. It will be located adjacent to Wallwork Hall in the footprint of what is now Keith Hall. It will have 500 seats and an 鈥渁ll you care to eat鈥� format. It also will house the main bakery and the central commissary for the campus dining program.

Bill Balint, 蘑菇tv鈥檚 Chief Technology Officer with more than a quarter-century of service to his alma mater, has been named the winner of the 2016 Pittsburgh Chief Information Officer of the Year Award (education division). Balint was one of three finalists in the education division, which is given jointly by the Pittsburgh Technology Council and the Greater Pittsburgh CIO Group.

Siobhan Howard, a visiting scholar from Mary Immaculate College in Limerick, Ireland, has spent part of a six-month sabbatical at 蘑菇tv working on a study about how the human body reacts to stress. The research she has been doing at 蘑菇tv revolves around having veterans鈥攑referably ones that have been deployed to war鈥攗ndergo a series of tests to see how they are affected by some common stressors.
Robert Matchett鈥檚 passion for the Autism Awareness Week project is so deep that he鈥檚 making sure it lives on after he graduates this spring. He鈥檚 working with a close friend and brother in his honor fraternity, Oktober Appleby, and he plans to hand over the project鈥檚 reins to her after the conclusion of this year鈥檚 event, which runs from April 18 to 22.
Kara McClain, a nursing major in the Cook Honors College from Grove City, has been named a recipient of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. This national award recognizes outstanding students in the science, mathematics, and engineering fields across the nation.

蘑菇tv will launch a per-credit tuition pricing program for the fall 2016 semester for undergraduate students who live in Pennsylvania.
As a recipient of the funds, 蘑菇tv will serve as a host institution for 16 international secondary teachers (Fellows) for an immersive professional development experience.聽The ILEP Fellows also will be on site to learn from teachers at Indiana Area High School and Brashear High School in Pittsburgh to gain different contexts and perspectives on the American educational system.

蘑菇tv's Spanish Education K-12 program has been recognized for the third review cycle in a row by its national accrediting body鈥攁 first for any language education program in the country.

蘑菇tv鈥檚 doctoral program in clinical psychology (the PsyD program) has been recognized as one of the top five programs in the nation by 鈥淏est Counseling Degrees.鈥� The website evaluated programs from 69 different institutions and selected the top 50 programs for students.聽
The articulation program, which will begin in the 2016 spring semester, will be taught entirely at CCAC. Students will begin studies with CCAC courses and then spend their last two years taking 蘑菇tv courses taught by 蘑菇tv faculty on CCAC Allegheny Campus.聽Students will transition to 蘑菇tv while remaining in Pittsburgh.
